Job Summary : Summer internship program providing an introduction to commercial lending within the banking industry, as well as entry-level credit analysis training and experience. Commercial credit interns will provide credit department support through financial statement analysis, data input, and other special projects.

Essential Functions :

  • Analyzes and evaluates complex financial information, loan data, market data, and other information for companies and industries.
  • Produces analysis for new, renewal and existing loans, using data provided from financial statements, tax returns, industry sources, credit bureaus, and other sources.
  • Assists with the preparation of memorandums, spreadsheets, reports, summaries and opinions for credit committee and officers for use in lending decisions. These work products may include credit investigations of companies and industries; economic and market conditions; in-depth historical financial analysis; in-depth projected financial analysis; “what if” scenarios that test the reasonableness of projections; collateral analysis; and the financial analysis of individuals.
  • Creates, reviews, and updates new and existing reports for Southside Bank’s loan portfolio analysis and tracking, as needed.
  • Attends departmental and organizational meetings and discussions, as relevant.
  • Pursues knowledge of current and emerging legal, compliance, and market matters involving commercial lending.
  • Participates in special projects and assignments and performs other credit department duties as assigned. As possible, gains exposure to other areas of banking through departmental rotations.
  • Maintains confidentiality of all sensitive Bank information.

  • Performs duties in compliance with applicable laws and regulations, including but not limited to the Bank Secrecy Act (BSA) and related anti-money laundering laws, and in accordance with the Bank’s Information Security Program.
  • Must comply with all applicable laws and regulations.

Additional Functions:

  • Complies with all safety policies, practices, and procedures. Report all unsafe activities to supervisor and/or Human Resources.
  • Performs additional duties, as assigned or directed.

Required Education/Experience :

  • Required: Enrollment in a Bachelor’s degree program in business administration from an accredited college or university in finance, accounting or related area. Preferred: Enrollment in an MBA or other related advanced degree program.
  • Required: Minimum of 6 hours of accounting courses (completed or to be completed as part of the applicant’s degree program). Preferred: 9 hours of accounting courses, including Intermediate Accounting I or equivalent, and/or relevant professional experience.

Technical Skills :

  • General proficiency in computer applications.
  • Advanced proficiency in Microsoft Excel and an ability to understand and produce complex and professional spreadsheets. Ability to produce thorough and professional written reviews and reports.
  • Excellent technical writing skills. Must be able to clearly, concisely, and accurately relate complicated information in an understandable format.
  • Interested in reading, analyzing, and interpreting complex legal and financial documents.
  • Ability to thoroughly research and evaluate information to make decisions and solve problems.
  • Ability to apply principles of logical or technical thinking to a wide range of intellectual and practical problems.
  • Ability to deal with a variety of abstract concepts.
  • Ability to effectively and persuasively write technical memorandums and participate in impromptu discussions.
  • Ability to work in a high volume environment and meet deadlines.
  • Strong time management skills and an ability to prioritize daily workflow.
  • Ability to respond effectively to the most sensitive inquiries or complaints.

Physical Activity/Dexterity:

  • Manual dexterity sufficient to reach/handle items and work with fingers. Works with fingers and perceives attributes of objects and materials.

Physical Environment Demands:

  • Must be able to remain in a stationary position 90% of the time.
  • The person in this position needs to occasionally move about inside the office to visit other offices, conference rooms, office machinery, etc.
  • Constantly operates a computer and other office productivity machinery, such as a calculator, copy machine, and telephone.
  • Constantly positions self to operate on a computer.
  • The person in this position frequently communicates with other people throughout each day. Must be able to exchange accurate information when conversing.

Working Conditions/Environment:

  • Well-lighted, heated and/or air-conditioned indoor office setting with adequate ventilation.
  • Moderate noise (e.g. business office with computers and printers, light traffic).
