Requirements Bachelor's degree or higher For co‑curricular subjects, teachers with a bachelor's degree in the subject taught are preferred or, at a minimum, 36 hours of higher education credit in the subject area of instruction Successful completion of a satisfactory background check as required by state law and the South Carolina Department of Education Dedication to a rigorous liberal arts education Loyalty to the school and ACA’s mission and vision Commitment to model moral character in line with the Core Virtues and the pursuit of the Good, True, and Beautiful Adherence to all ACA policies, including the Employee Handbook, Family Handbook, and all applicable school and board policies Position Specifics Classical K‑6 grammar school teachers experience the joy of mastering the key elements of instruction—explicit phonics, Singapore math, Core Knowledge history and science, and English grammar—with support from peers within the school and the wider Ascent Classical Academies network. Instruction in lower grades emphasizes literacy and number sense. Teachers are expected to be classroom authorities, shaping the minds, hearts, and bodies of young people. Duties and Responsibilities Create a safe classroom environment for all students to learn and reach their fullest potential. Develop thoughtful, well‑planned lessons while adhering to the curriculum. Maintain an orderly classroom. Provide timely and meaningful evaluation and correction of student work. Engage students using the Socratic method. Lead students through intelligence, charisma, humor, moral integrity, and example. Perform additional assigned campus duties. Follow school policies and procedures to ensure safety and security of students. Assist students needing individual help; coordinate make‑up work after approved absences. Communicate regularly with parents as needed. Attend special school events such as information sessions, concerts, plays, and presentations. Attend all staff meetings and professional development opportunities. Support the school dress and behavior codes and promote orderly behavior of all students. Maintain the gradebook, notify parents of deficiencies, and prepare grade reports. Participate in review meetings with the Headmaster or designated authority. Pursue excellence in teaching and continue developing knowledge of the great ideas and works of Western Civilization. Maintain regular, punctual attendance and professional appearance, adhering to relevant health and safety procedures.
