Minimum Qualifications

  • Education: Graduate of a professional school of nursing which is an accredited program in Massachusetts. Bachelor's degree in nursing or related field is required. Master's degree in nursing, education, or a related field is preferred.
  • Experience: Five or more years of clinical nursing experience, three of which must be in maternity/OB.
  • License: Massachusetts nursing license required.
  • Certifications: BLS & NRP required. BLS & NRP instructor certification is also required.

Job Functions

  1. Collaborates with the Director of Obstetrical Nursing and staff to assess learning needs.
  2. Plans and implements educational activities to meet identified needs, utilizing adult and pediatric learning principles.
  3. Plans and implements annual educational and competency review plans for the department.
  4. Develops and utilizes appropriate evaluation mechanisms to determine the effectiveness of learning.
  5. Promotes collaborative relationships among health care professionals.
  6. Participates in activities that promote professional development.
  7. Participates in and coordinates patient/family and community education as assigned.
  8. Develops and coordinates orientation programs for all new staff based on individual needs.
  9. Actively participates in hospital committees as assigned, including resuscitation, nurse practice council, trauma committee, stroke committee, and nursing council.
  10. Develops special projects in collaboration with the Director of Obstetrical Nursing based on current needs.
  11. Serves as the Department Coordinator for unit-specific courses.
  12. Demonstrates clinical expertise in Obstetrical Nursing.
  13. Serves as a clinical resource, role model, and internal consultant.
  14. Participates in performance improvement activities.
  15. Utilizes evidence-based practice in policy and procedure development and instructional activities.
  16. Assists in the development of standards of nursing practice.
  17. Responsible for developing and maintaining department-specific policies and procedures.
  18. Actively participates in professional associations and activities.
  19. Maintains currency through credentialing and continuing education.
  20. Maintains and supports patient's rights.

Job Summary

The Nurse Educator serves as a role model, consultant, change agent, and facilitator in assessing learning needs and in planning, implementing, and evaluating educational activities for the Obstetrical Nursing areas. Utilizing instructional techniques and adult and pediatric learning principles, this position develops and implements job aids, performance criteria, clinical competencies, and interactive practical experiences to support staff development based on identified educational needs.
