Position Overview

The Vice Dean for Research will provide leadership and strategic direction for the research enterprise at the UI College of Medicine. The role involves fostering a culture of excellence in research, advancing the college's research portfolio, and integrating research with clinical and educational missions.

Key Responsibilities

  • Promote innovative, high-impact research across basic, clinical, and translational sciences.
  • Implement the college’s research strategy aligned with its strategic plan.
  • Oversee investments in thematic research areas such as Cancer, Cardiovascular and Pulmonary Diseases, Neuroscience, and others.
  • Collaborate with department heads and leadership to attract and retain top faculty.
  • Foster multidisciplinary and thematic research programs.
  • Develop relationships with external stakeholders to support research goals.
  • Ensure compliance with institutional policies, regulations, and ethical standards.
  • Manage research resources, including budgets and infrastructure.
  • Oversee graduate programs and support research training and faculty development.
  • Promote commercialization of research findings and intellectual property development.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.

Minimum Qualifications

  • PhD, MD, or equivalent in Medicine or Biomedical Sciences.
  • At least ten years of leadership in a research-intensive environment, preferably in an academic medical center.
  • Proven success in securing research funding and leading impactful research programs.
  • Strong leadership, management, and interpersonal skills.
  • Excellent communication skills and ability to engage with diverse stakeholders.
  • Experience in strategic planning and implementation in an academic setting.
  • Commitment to research ethics and integrity.
